In television, breaking news is an urgent event or development that warrants the interruption of non-news programming and/or a national network’s regular newscast. The telecast typically starts with an alert graphic or lower third, usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue, and an announcer stating “breaking news” or “special report.” In the past, cut-ins from networks were reserved for the most important events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their programming at the same time. In recent years, 24-hour news channels have made breaking news more common through special tickers that can be inserted at any point during regular programing.
