Breaking news is the term for a story of current interest that warrants the interruption of regular, non-news programming, particularly in the case of a major event such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required the national networks to interrupt regular broadcasts for full coverage. The term was also used in the days before 24-hour news channels, when television and radio stations usually only interrupted non-news programming for breaking news events that were considered especially urgent, such as tornado warnings or landfalling hurricanes. In these cases, station identification would be displayed over the top of the news feed along with a countdown sequence.
