Historically, TV news has been a profitable business. But with streaming, a new generation of TV news services is ready to change the way we get our news.
Streaming news is an easy way for viewers to access current news anytime and anywhere. It looks and feels like conventional TV, but is largely free. It offers news analysis, documentaries, and reruns. In the future, new, overtly political news operations could follow suit, feeding an audience polarized by politics.
News streaming has proven to be popular with a broad audience. In fact, 85 percent of U.S. households subscribe to at least one streaming service.
Streaming news has already been adopted by a number of TV stations. In some cases, local stations have partnered with their network feed to report on breaking news. In other cases, local stations will join a network feed on an “extended edition.”
Streaming news has also been used by networks to archive programs. When an event is breaking, the network may take over coverage and integrate the story with news analysis and other programming. For sustained coverage, regular commercial advertising may be suspended.
News broadcasters have long sensed a technological advantage in serving a streaming audience. They’ve invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations, and have high hopes for the future. Streaming executives have avoided over-hyping streaming. They know that their audience is vanishing. Instead, they’re trying to avoid sacrificing quality for convenience.
For example, Fox Nation has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its streaming app. They lose $20 per year in subscription fees.
