Breaking news is an urgent story that requires a sudden interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network or local newscasts). This typically begins with a countdown sequence on the screen to allow any stations affiliated with the news network to switch over to the breaking news report; a special graphics open with a distinctive music cue then follows. The reporting on the story may last only a few minutes, or continue for hours, or even days, depending on the situation. Breaking news coverage is common on 24-hour cable and satellite news networks, but was once limited to nationally significant events that prompted stations to interrupt regular programming, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
