Trending is a breaking news story that has gained significant popularity on social media platforms in the past 24 hours. Trending stories are highlighted on the Current News screen with a special graphic and accompanying music cue, and may also be interrupted during non-news programming (such as regular network newscasts) when the event warrants an immediate interruption. This is a common feature on 24-hour news networks, though before these networks existed, national broadcasters would only interrupt regularly scheduled programs for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F.
