The term breaking news is often used to describe a news story that is happening at the time the program is being broadcast. This type of news is also called late-breaking news, special coverage, or a news flash. The term is often used to describe a story that has a wide range of interest among viewers. While it is commonly used to describe a story that’s happening right now, “breaking news” is not necessarily synonymous with “live news.”

A network may continue to show a live shot of the anchor during the coverage of an event. In contrast, a local station may cut away from the anchor to continue their story and then continue with the newscast. In addition, the network may pass the coverage to another reporter at the scene of the event, who can share more information as the story unfolds. In this case, the anchor’s goal is to alert viewers to what is happening locally, and then continue the broadcast.

Breaking news may interrupt programs in prime time, especially if the program is highly rated. In addition, breaking news may disrupt highly rated programs that have little time to air. The Shayrat missile attack on ABC in April 2017 interrupted a Scandal episode. Likewise, some local news stations may not broadcast breaking news stories unless they are deemed “breaking.”
