Breaking news is a type of television or radio program coverage that interrupts non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates, regular scheduled network newscasts) when an event occurs that requires immediate, nationwide coverage. The breaking news segment usually begins with a countdown sequence to allow other network affiliates to switch to the national network feed, then an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Depending on the nature of the story, it may last only minutes or continue for several hours or days. The term “Newsflash” and the term “Special report” are also used to refer to these segments.
