A breaking news story is an event that warrants the immediate interruption of regular programming. It’s often reported through a special newsflash, or with the use of a ticker on the bottom of the screen if the event is serious enough. Until 24-hour news networks emerged, the interruption of regular programs was only used in the case of extremely severe events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The newsflash or special report is usually accompanied by a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates to switch over to the feed. Other special graphics and music cues may be used to convey a sense of urgency.
