When news breaks that warrants a brief interruption of non-news programming, the network alerts its affiliate stations to “stand by” for the cut-in. The station pauses its regular programming for a few seconds and then goes to a special news graphic (often accompanied by a distinctive music cue) that allows viewers to switch to the network feed and hear about the breaking news event. Depending on the seriousness of the news, an anchor is often introduced to explain it. In the past, such breaks were typically limited to news of extreme urgency, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, that required numerous stations to interrupt their regular broadcasts. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have begun to use the term “Special Report” for select breaking stories during their regularly scheduled broadcasts, lessening the need for cut-ins.
