Streaming news is one of the fastest-growing genres of television programming. It arrives on demand, and travels wherever you are. The major news networks have high hopes for streaming, and have already spent hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. However, the streaming landscape is far from clear-cut.
For example, how does a national network newscast handle breaking news? When news breaks during a broadcast, the network talent will typically pause for a few seconds before resuming the program. Depending on the length of the break, the network may continue the live shot of the anchor, or it may cut away to a video of the story.
Networks may also incorporate analysis into the story. Depending on the length of the coverage, programs may need to be rescheduled. A network may also suspend regular commercial advertising.
If the break is long enough, the network may start rerunning previously aired programming. In addition, it may resume programming from the beginning at the point of the interruption. The network talent may also pass the coverage to a reporter at the location of the breaking event. This reporter may share more information as it breaks, and the network may even change the lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency.
Some local stations are given a cue by network talent to break away from the network feed and begin new programming. The network will notify all affiliates, and the station may start a new evening newscast or an extended edition.
