Breaking News is a news story that is so urgent that it requires an immediate interruption of regular, non-news programming, or in the case of national network newscasts, of their network feed. Often the national network will use a countdown sequence to alert its affiliates that breaking news is occurring, and to prepare to interrupt their own local programming with the network’s news feed. The network will usually introduce the story through an opening graphic and a distinctive music cue, followed by a live reporter. Occasionally, lower thirds or other graphics may be used to convey the urgency of the event.
