About Current News

Trending is the best way to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in the world around you. With breaking news updates and video, you’ll get to know the things that matter most.

Breaking news is a type of television or radio news report that warrants an interruption of non-news programming, or in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts, to provide live coverage of a developing story or event. It may require a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic and music cue, and the broadcasters’ logos are often overlaid. Previously, breaking news was typically limited to major events that elicit nationwide attention, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a natural disaster, that required stations to interrupt their regular schedules and use cut-ins.

NBC’s breaking news reports are accompanied by an audio track, often with a distinctive music cue. If the story is time sensitive, a countdown will be shown to allow network affiliates to switch to the news feed. Otherwise, the newscast is paused and a special ticker is used. NBC has also begun to air breaking news stories through their “Special Report” segments, which reduces the need for interruptive breaks.
