When a news event occurs that is sufficiently important to warrant interrupting non-news programs, or even regularly scheduled newscasts on network television and radio, the networks usually provide coverage of it through “breaking news” or “special report” reports. In the days before 24-hour news channels existed, such interruptions were usually reserved for extremely urgent events — a presidential assassination or severe weather, for example. When a breaking news event does occur, the national news network usually alerts its affiliate stations and pauses its own feed to allow them to switch over to the breaking news feed. The network often also uses a special graphic that overlays over lower thirds and other station imaging to signal the change in program.
