Streaming is an evolution of television. It provides news and entertainment in a format that travels with the viewer wherever he or she goes. It’s a much more efficient way to deliver and archive news than broadcast TV.

Streaming also offers viewers the ability to customize their experience. They can choose to watch only certain programs, or they can watch them reruns, or they can watch them as a documentary. It’s like cable but without the restrictions.

Several major news networks have spent hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. They’re offering documentaries, reruns, and nightly news programs. Their hope is that the format will attract mass audiences, re-purpose programming from broadcast, and provide news analysis.

The streaming landscape is already full of niche audiences. Fox has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its Fox Nation streaming app. It has also shown that audiences will pay for content. In addition, Newsmax has planted a flag in the streaming frontier.

The proliferation of new choices could lead to polarization amongst the audience. This could create kindling for innovators.

Streaming is likely to reshape political news coverage. Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and CNN are already in the streaming business. One America News, Fox’s sister network, is expected to join the fray.

The major news networks have high hopes for streaming. They plan to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022. They want to earn a slice of the estimated $3 billion profit from streaming. They’re also hoping to lure new overtly political news operations into the mix.
