Streaming news has been around for ten years. Major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to make streaming operations a success. Streaming allows viewers to customize their news experience. Newscasts on the major streaming networks are scheduled to run regularly, giving viewers the option to watch them whenever they want. They also offer news analysis and documentaries.
Streaming news has attracted viewers of all ages and interests. In fact, viewers spend more time watching streaming programming than they do watching conventional television. Streaming also allows for the building of news libraries, as well as the ability to archive content.
Streaming news has also created a new breed of overtly political news operations. These include One America News, which is likely to become the next major network to enter the online video streaming market.
Streaming news has also provided a platform for niche audiences. For example, a local CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh piped coverage of the bridge collapse to streamers.
One of the largest streaming networks, ABC News, recently entered the market. In addition to nightly news programs, it also offers documentary programs.
In the United States, about 85 percent of households subscribe to at least one streaming service. That number is likely to drop in the coming years as more households adopt digital technology.
The free news streamers resemble cable’s approach, and they are attempting to persuade viewers to cut their cable subscriptions in favor of a free service. They are also promoting cable-quality news.
