The current news in higher education is all about segmentation. Higher education enrollment marketing experts are targeting different audiences. They are not only focusing on the students in their classrooms, but those online and offline.

While a student’s first year of college was not the most gratifying, there was a silver lining. One student in particular stumbled across a golden opportunity in the form of a college degree. She wanted to become a police officer, but first needed to earn her degree. In the process, she discovered that she was eligible to participate in a federal program.

Fortunately, the program was available in her home state of Illinois. Thanks to her persistence and an unwavering commitment to student development, she graduated with a degree in criminal justice. After that, she entered the workforce as a public relations intern for the Illinois Department of Corrections. Now, she is an associate professor of educational leadership at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

In addition to obtaining a bachelor’s and master’s degrees, she became involved with her alma mater through a philanthropic foundation. This organization donated money to help fund SIUE’s new engineering building. Along with the donation came a ribbon cutting ceremony and a special collection of historical research.

Those who have attended SIUE know it is not a small school. During Homecoming week, the university had an open house and hosted alumni and friends of the institution. It also received a notable prize.
