When breaking news occurs, television and radio broadcasters usually interrupt current non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) for coverage. When an event reaches a certain level of urgency, the network will generally issue a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”, which consists of a countdown sequence followed by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Depending on the nature of the event being covered, a news anchor will then appear on air and begin reporting. Before 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was usually reserved for extremely serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
