Breaking news is an ongoing broadcast that interrupts other regular programming on radio and television, often to cover urgent news events such as natural disasters or a major political event. It is most common on national network affiliates, who interrupt their regular newscasts when the news breaks (though they will typically pause to allow viewers to switch over to the breaking news feed) and use a special graphic and music cue for the report, sometimes overlaid with the station identification. This type of reporting was rarely used until 24-hour news networks grew in popularity and caused stations to interrupt their regular programming on a more frequent basis.
