Trending is a segment of Current News that talks about news stories that are currently popular. These segments are usually shorter in length than other Current News segments and sometimes feature one story or topic. Often, they also are used to introduce a breaking news event or provide context for a developing story. Unlike a newsflash, this type of news requires an interruption to regular programming. Often, a network will alert affiliate stations to prepare to interrupt their regular programming. Depending on the severity of the breaking news, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news reports are commonly referred to as news crawls, newsflashes and special report. Before 24-hour news networks existed, cut-ins to regular non-news broadcasts were limited to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
