During a recent news event, a local station may pipe a live report to streamers. This is known as breaking news.
This is typically a story of wide interest to the audience. A reporter at the scene of the breaking event will provide additional information as it becomes available. A special report can be as long as several hours. The format commonly includes an internal alert service to disseminate information to all network affiliates.
A reverse countdown is an easy way to let viewers know that the news will be coming back on soon. It usually starts at five seconds. The lower thirds may be adjusted to convey a sense of urgency.
The ABC news channel’s breaking news story about the Shayrat missile strike in April 2017 interrupted a new episode of Scandal. The network then brought Scandal back on air. This is the first time the station has used this method.
In the past, a town crier bellowed news about the latest news on the town. This was limited by the news sources available and the distance the town crier walked. A newssheet was much more portable. It was also sharable.
The World News section includes a list of local news and information on international news. It also has links to local radio stations and media.
The outro promos direct viewers to the network website or streaming news channels. They may also show a live shot of the anchor, announcing that the news will be back on later.
