About Trending

When an event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, the broadcast of regular non-news programming is interrupted. A countdown usually precedes the breaking news announcement, and stations are instructed to interrupt their local programming (or in the case of a network feed, to pause their current live newscast). Often, a breaking news graphic is used, with station identification overlaid during the news report. Other names for this type of reporting include Newsflash and Special Report. Breaking news may last only minutes, or it can continue for hours or days. For a time, severe weather warnings required breaking news reports to be cut-ins during regular programming.
