Breaking news is when an urgent event requires a news broadcast to be interrupted, usually with an alert crawl or cut-in during regular programming on television and radio. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were often reserved for the most pressing national events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a severe weather emergency such as a hurricane. When an event occurs that is deemed to warrant breaking news coverage, a network will typically alert all of its affiliates to stand by for the interruption. Then, the newscast will pause for a countdown sequence to allow stations to join the network feed.
