When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming or a scheduled network newscast, the broadcaster will alert all of its affiliates to stand by. The station’s feed will then go to a countdown sequence that allows the various affiliated stations to switch over to the network’s break-in feed, often accompanied by an opening graphic and distinct music cue. Depending on the severity of the story, the network may provide analysis through analysts in-studio or by phone, satellite or other means. Historically, such breaks were reserved for highly urgent events that could not wait for an entire hour or more of standard programming; this practice was reduced significantly with the introduction of 24-hour news networks. Also known as Newsflash and Special report.
