If a breaking news event occurs, the regular programming of a network or a station may be interrupted for live coverage. The break will normally be accompanied by a news anchor or reporter, and often with the use of a special graphic or lower thirds to convey the sense of urgency and importance of the story. Breaking news typically lasts a few minutes or, in cases of severe weather, can continue for multiple hours or even days. Prior to the emergence of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were only reserved for extremely important events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, or those requiring nationwide coverage requiring many stations to interrupt their schedules simultaneously. (See also “Newsflash” and “Special report.”)
