Streaming news is set to revolutionize the way political and news coverage is done. Streaming allows viewers to watch the news anywhere, anytime. A combination of streaming and cable has enabled the networks to chase breaking news, archive content, and schedule regular nightly news programs.
The major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars into streaming operations. They hope to use it to deliver their news in the most efficient manner possible. But they need to avoid overhyping the technology.
Streaming news has proven to be a hit among a variety of audiences. Some viewers are willing to pay for the content. Others, however, have become commercial-averse.
Several free news streamers have sprung up, encouraging viewers to cut their cable subscription. As the number of consumers has grown, the need for a viable alternative has also grown. This has led to the rise of a slew of new, overtly political news operations.
Many of these streamers are similar in approach to cable. While they are not free, they offer a variety of news-related programming, including documentaries and reruns of broadcast programs.
The competition in the streaming marketplace has led to the introduction of some major players, such as Newsy, Cheddar, and Al Jazeera. Each has planted a flag in the streaming frontier.
Fox has also launched a streaming app, attracting 1.5 million subscribers. Its audience is primarily under 45.
In addition to its online streaming app, Fox also runs several cable news channels. CNN, Fox, and MSNBC are all projected to make $3 billion in profit in 2020.
