When a news event occurs that is considered urgent enough to interrupt non-news programming or, in the case of a network television newscast, a live program, broadcasters typically use a special graphic and distinctive music cue to alert viewers to the break. This is called a newsflash or a special report. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was limited to events that elicited nationwide coverage and required many stations to break away from their regular programming for a live report.
