During prime time, news stations may need to interrupt their programming for breaking news. This coverage is usually brief and may have limited importance.

Depending on the magnitude of the breaking news, the news station may join the network feed in progress or interrupt the programming entirely. The station may also choose to break away from the network feed and begin a new evening newscast.

While there is some debate over what constitutes a breaking news event, the term is often used to refer to the most important story of the moment. During a breaking news event, the anchor may introduce the news, share an event video, and give a brief recap of the story. In the end, the news anchor may remind viewers that the full story will be presented on local news.

Sometimes, networks will offer an “extended edition” of a program to provide more detail. This could be a newscast, a special report, or a segment from a syndicated program. The length of the coverage can also dictate the action of the network. A program that is scheduled to run for 20 or 45 minutes may have to be rescheduled.

During a breaking news event, the station may send coverage to a reporter at the location of the breaking news. They may also share more details as the story breaks. The station may also offer a reverse countdown, which usually starts at five seconds.

Some networks offer outro promos, which direct viewers to other platforms such as the network website, other streaming news channels, or a local station’s website.
