When an event happens that requires immediate, nationwide coverage, a station will interrupt non-news programming (or in the case of a national network, its regular newscast) and will alert affiliates to “stand by” or “stand by for a special report.” Often, these reports will feature lower third graphics with a distinctive music cue, which is sometimes also used as a branding mark. These types of breaks were common before 24-hour news channels were created, as was the use of the term Breaking News.
