Monterey Park resident: ‘I’m not going to live in fear’

ABC News’ Kayna Whitworth spoke with Elizabeth Yang, a resident of Monterey Park, California, who regularly attends the Star Ballroom Dance Studio where 11 people were killed.

A town crier bellowed news as he walked through a village. This was a way to get news to the people who needed it. However, the town crier was limited by his or her distance from the source.

Later, radio became a major way to transmit news. It was not until the 20th century that television was used to send news.

In the 20th century, television and radio merged into the dominant means of transmitting news. Newspapers sprang up and the printed version of news was made available to a wider audience.

After World War II, the United Press International was a world news agency. But it dwindled in the 1980s, when it was sold off at bargain prices.

In the 1990s, cable TV one-upped broadcast news. The cable news business was profitable. Yet, critics of CNN missed the fast rate of adoption of cable.

When the Internet ushered in the 21st century, it was not just news, but entertainment. People sought new forms of information. They wanted to know what was going on around the world. And the streaming media industry took advantage of this.

Streaming news offers viewers the ability to customize their viewing experience. The content arrives at a time that suits their interests. For instance, viewers might enjoy documentaries, live events, or news analysis.

There are also a variety of social and technological developments that have helped to shape the way we consume news. As a result, the boundaries between professional and amateur journalists have been blurred. Some journalists claim to report all sides of an issue without bias. Other media outlets perform automated news gathering.
