Breaking news is a special report that interrupts normal non-news programming or, in the case of network newscasts, their regular schedule for live coverage of an important news story. When a breaking event occurs that requires immediate, nationwide coverage, networks will alert their affiliates to stand by for the interruption and may use a countdown sequence. The report is often called a Newsflash or a Special Report, and can be presented by an anchor in-studio, via satellite, or over the internet.
