Trending is the term used to refer to any news item that is presently being talked about by popular media outlets. The trending news may be a current event, a person or a celebrity, an upcoming sporting event, or even a political scandal. Generally, if an event is being trending, it means that it has generated enough interest among the mass media to warrant an interruption of currently broadcast non-news programs, or in the case of national network television and radio, a pause in a regularly scheduled newscast. Upon the interruption of regular programming, there is usually an opening graphic and a distinctive music cue to indicate the breaking news event. Alternatively, a newsflash or special report can be used to break news events of immediate importance.
