A breaking news report is an interruption of non-news programming to cover an event that has occurred or may occur in the near future. It usually consists of an opening graphic, with a distinctive music cue, and a live anchored newscast. The network usually alerts its affiliates that the break is occurring, and they are asked to stand by. This style of reporting is very common on 24-hour news channels, but was previously reserved for events that elicited nationwide coverage and required many stations to interrupt their regular programming, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.[2] Special Report or Newsflash are alternative names for this type of reporting.

UPDATED: Gas prices are on the rise again, as Iran’s neighbors rage, and a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz could drive up oil prices.
