Breaking news is newsworthy information that warrants an immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of a network newscast, of a segment in progress). When breaking news occurs that demands urgent coverage, stations usually send out a special “Newsflash” alert to their affiliates. The network will then interrupt its regular feed with a countdown sequence, giving affiliated stations time to switch over and join the live network feed. This is common for national news events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and severe weather events. In recent years, 24-hour news networks have replaced this type of cutting-in with “Special Report” tickers and other graphics that can be displayed during regular programming.
