Trending is a term used by television and radio stations to refer to breaking news stories that require them to interrupt current non-news programming (or in the case of a network broadcast, a regularly scheduled newscast) in order to cover the story. Breaking news events generally begin with a countdown sequence followed by a special graphic and distinctive music cue, indicating to viewers that the station is going live. Often, the graphics used during breaks are altered to convey a sense of urgency, such as by using a larger text and bolder colors. In recent years, networks have begun to use “Newsflash” or “Special Report” tickers for select breaking stories during their regular newscasts, lessening the need for cut-ins.
