In television news, breaking news is an urgent event that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network or local newscasts. This type of news often involves an ongoing story such as severe weather or a terrorist attack that may require a sustained news coverage. A station’s normal commercial or station imaging promo is typically replaced by a special ticker (often called a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”), while lower third graphics and other visual elements are often modified to convey a sense of urgency. Before 24-hour news networks, interrupting regular programming was usually reserved for the most serious news events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
