A breaking news story is a news event of sufficient importance that it requires a television or radio network to interrupt its regular programming (and, in some cases, its affiliates’ non-news programs as well) to report on the subject. If a national network’s newscast is in progress when the breaking event occurs, the network will usually announce that it is interrupting and may ask the audience to stand by. A countdown will then appear on the screen, and after the countdown is complete, the newscast will pause to allow network affiliates to join the feed and begin airing the breaking news. The break in programming is often signaled by a graphic that includes the word “breaking.” Some 24-hour news networks use special tickers for specific breaking stories, lessening the need for frequent cut-ins from regular programming.
