Breaking news is a type of television or radio broadcast in which an urgent story requires the network or station to interrupt regular non-news programming, or in some cases, a regularly scheduled newscast. Breaking news events usually begin with a countdown sequence on the main network feed, followed by a special opening graphic (often overlaid with a distinctive music cue) to indicate an imminent interruption. In the past, such breaks were usually reserved for extremely serious events that required immediate nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, or severe weather events requiring ongoing updates (often with “special alert crawls” during regular programming). The terms news flash and special report are also used, though they may refer to different types of news content.
