A breaking news event is a news story that requires an immediate, nationwide interruption of regular non-news programming in order to be reported and broadcast. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were extremely rare and restricted to extreme events such as the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy, during which time the network feed would pause temporarily to allow affiliates to switch over to it. This type of news event is also often referred to as a Newsflash or Special report.
