Breaking News is a term used by television and radio news broadcasters to describe events that are occurring immediately and require the network to interrupt regular programming for coverage. Typically, the breaking news event will be indicated by a special graphic or ticker that overlays onto regular non-news programming, which may pause for a brief countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch over to the national network feed, before resuming the normal broadcast with a special anchor segment. This type of interruption was once limited to events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, but is now commonplace on 24-hour news channels that have an anchor ready to be interrupted at any time.
