Current News (also referred to as breaking news, news flash or special report) is the interruption of a scheduled program or story in order to report on the latest developments regarding a particular event. These breaks are usually accompanied by an opening graphic, with music such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events,” or an introduction of a news anchor and lower thirds altered to convey the importance of the event being reported.
Breaking news is an important element of broadcast television, radio, and online streaming services. Traditionally, breaking news was only used for stories of significant significance. However, since 24-hour news channels have been gaining popularity, the term has also been applied to soft news stories that do not warrant the attention of broadcasters but are interesting for viewers.
In addition to these more esoteric uses of the term, some networks have made breaking news a staple of their programming; for example, Fox News Channel and CNN carry a daily political affairs program titled Special Report, which is often characterized by extensive coverage of recent events.
Local news is often interrupted for a similar reason; local stations may choose to switch to the network feed for coverage of a major national breaking news story, especially if the story has local implications. This is usually done to prevent a station’s morning and/or afternoon programs from being pre-empted, and to ensure that viewers can continue to receive the latest updates on their local area.
