About Trending

Breaking News is a term used by broadcasting and journalism to describe events that occur so suddenly and with such urgency that the normal programming of a television or radio station must be interrupted in order to cover the event. The breaking news will usually involve an urgently pressing issue, such as a terrorist attack, military action, or natural disaster. The event may also require nationwide coverage that would require the network’s affiliate stations to interrupt their local programming to carry the breaking news from the headquarters of the network. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were usually reserved for the most serious of events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. This type of news break often consists of an opening graphic and an audio cue that alerts the audience to the breaking story. In the case of a national network newscast, it is often followed by a countdown sequence to allow the affiliate stations to join in the live broadcast.
