Current News (also known as Breaking News, Late-Breaking News, Special Report, or simply “breaking” in some countries) is the interruption of scheduled programming to bring about news or a story that is of interest to a wide audience. It may be a highly significant story, or it may be a story that has little impact on the day-to-day events of the world.
The earliest breaking news stories were typically restricted to extremely urgent or important events, such as the death of an influential figure, though these days the term has been applied to any event that requires the attention of a broadcaster to report its details. For example, a story about a terrorist attack is considered breaking news when it causes the network to interrupt its regular programming and switch to a news-based feed with an opening graphic and music.
During the actual coverage, the news anchor usually explains what is happening and the reason behind it. In some cases, the story is passed to a reporter on the scene of the incident, allowing them to share more details with viewers.
If the story is a national news event, a montage of pictures and graphics is often used to highlight the story. This may be a photo gallery, or it may be footage from the actual event itself.
The outro usually features a quick promo directing viewers to the network’s website for more information, or it may include a disclaimer that further details will be revealed on a later date. It is also common to include a brief video of the breaking news itself.
