In broadcast television, breaking news is an event that warrants the interruption of regular non-news programming for ongoing coverage. It is most common with national network newscasts, and is usually preceded by a “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic overlaid on the screen. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were normally reserved for events of high urgency, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, which triggered nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to break into their regular programming and feeds to the network. The newscast pauses, and the network will often provide its own countdown sequence to affiliates to allow them time to switch over.
