When a story breaks that warrants interruption of current non-news programming or, in some cases, even a regularly scheduled newscast, a network may issue an alert to its affiliate stations telling them to stand by. Then, the network’s feed will pause for a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch to its breaking news coverage.
