When a story breaks that warrants interruption of current non-news programming or, in some cases, even a regularly scheduled newscast, a network may issue an alert to its affiliate stations telling them to stand by. Then, the network’s feed will pause for a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch to its breaking news coverage. A news anchor then welcomes viewers to the broadcast and introduces the story at hand. In some cases, the report will be accompanied by a distinctively sounding music cue and an opening graphic with a unique color scheme.
