Breaking news is an urgent news story that warrants a temporary interruption of non-news programming, such as regular broadcasts of a national network newscast or local television station newscasts. It may also elicit the interrupting of a live event coverage such as a sporting event, or news conference, or an emergency call-in from a government agency or disaster relief organization. The interruption is often announced through a scrolling graphic, and is usually accompanied by a distinct music cue. The feature is commonly known as a “Newsflash” or “Special report.”
Before 24-hour news networks were common, breaking news was limited to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted multiple stations to interrupt their regular programming and switch to breaking news. In recent years, networks have begun to use special reports in place of cut-ins and alert crawls, which reduces the number of interrupting breaks.
