When a breaking news event occurs, broadcasters will interrupt non-news programming (or, in some cases, regular, ongoing newscasts) to provide live coverage of the incident. This is commonly known as a “newsflash” or “special report”. When the story is deemed to be of significant enough importance, national networks will typically pause their feed and use a countdown sequence to allow affiliate stations to switch over to their breaking news coverage. Occasionally, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to emphasize the urgency of the news. This is a common feature at 24-hour news channels where breaking news can occur at any time.
