Breaking News is a news story that warrants an immediate interruption of non-news programming (or in some cases, regular scheduled newscasts). Depending on the severity of the event, it may last just minutes, or may be followed by sustained coverage extending over hours or days. During such breaking events, a network will typically alert all its affiliates and tell them to stand by; if the station is already carrying a live national network newscast, they will be asked to pause the program and switch to the network feed. The national network will then usually begin the coverage with a graphic and distinctive music cue, which may be accompanied by a countdown sequence to indicate how long the newscast will be interrupted.
