About Current News
When a breaking news event occurs, network and local television stations interrupt regular programming to provide live coverage of the event. This usually begins with a special graphic that tells viewers to stand by, and sometimes includes a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to switch over to the national network feed. A typical breaking news report also includes a scrolling ticker, which is typically overlaid on the lower third of the screen and may use distinctive audio cues. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were rare, and generally reserved for extremely urgent news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Breaking news reports are less common on radio and in some cable-based television networks, however, as they tend to require extensive interruptions of regular programming.
