Breaking News is a term used to describe a live news event that is deemed to be of sufficient importance to interrupt current non-news programming or, in the case of network television, regular scheduled newscasts. Often, breaking news events are announced with a distinctive opening graphic and music cue. Historically, only extremely urgent and major news events would necessitate this type of interruption, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, but today, 24-hour news networks frequently interrupt regular programs for breaking stories. During breaking news reports, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to add urgency.
