Breaking News is a special television or radio news report that interrupts regular non-news programming (or, in the case of a national network newscast, the network’s regularly scheduled breaking news segment) and is often accompanied by a countdown sequence to give affiliate stations an opportunity to switch over to the national feed for the relevant event. Previously, such interruptions were reserved for events of extraordinary urgency, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Today, 24-hour news networks use tickers to cover breaking stories during normal programing, lessening the need for cut-ins.
